3D@Home Launches First Consumer Website
New Web Site Provides Objective Information about 3D Technology, Equipment, and Programming
SAN JOSE, Calif., Nov. 24, 2010 — The 3D@Home Consortium today announces 3DUniversity.net, a website designed to give consumers an unbiased source of useful information about 3D HDTV, monitors, Blu-ray® players, cell phones, cameras and camcorders and related eyewear, 3D content sources, as well as a database of 3D movies and special events — everything needed to get a great 3D experience in their homes. The website has consumer-friendly information on how and why it works, history of 3D, as well as more details on topics such as how to best set up your 3D home theatre.
A key role for the site is to debunk many of the myths circulating around 3D and give a glimpse into the future of home 3D entertainment. Information on the site was developed with input from all members in the consortium as well as a large group of 3D academics and stereoscopic scientists. Members of 3D@Home include, filmmakers, movie studios, cable and satellite operators, consumer electronics manufacturers, academic institutions, consumer and professional research organizations.
“3DUniversity.net takes a wide view of the 3D industry. Starting with how a 3D film or program is made to how it is best displayed,” notes Dan Schinasi, chair of Steering Team 3 (ST3) 3D Promotion, Education and Communication for 3D@Home and product planner for Samsung Electronics of America. “Studies show that consumers have many questions about 3D, ranging from what they can watch to how they connect it. We wanted to provide information to them in a friendly and easy-to-grasp manner, taking advantage of the 24/7 availability and easily-updateable nature of the internet.”
“A critical part of our mission is to educate both professionals and consumers on 3D and how it is made, distributed and displayed,” adds Heidi Hoffman, managing director of 3D@Home Consortium. “3DUniversity.net is one of our first efforts to provide information directly to the consumer. The site will continue to grow with 3D products and 3D movie listings, and an opportunity to opt-in to 3D industry updates. We have made it easy to find listings of 3D movies for the home, 3D theater releases and special events in 3D are conveniently located in one place on 3DUniversity.net.”
