MOD Systems Announces Playback of Digital Movie and TV Downloads to SD Cards on PCs, Consumer Electronics, and Mobile Devices

First Company to Enable Secure Playback of Downloaded Digital Entertainment Content on SD Cards; Launching New SDK, PC Player, SD to USB Converter, and Second Generation SD Card TV Player in First Half of 2010

LAS VEGAS — Jan 06, 2010 MOD Systems®, Inc. announces significant enhancements to its playback solution for movie and television downloads from kiosks, enabling playback on PCs, notebooks, netbooks, televisions, portable media players, and mobile phones. The MOD Systems playback solution is the first to enable secure playback of digital content downloaded onto Secure Digital (SD) memory cards.

The MOD Systems GreenPlay® SDK provides device manufacturers the ability to add playback support for premium content stored securely on SD cards. Using the SDK, which is based on open standards and the SD Association specifications for secure video, MOD Systems and partners have co-developed a PC Player, a secure SD card to USB converter for PCs lacking an SD card slot, and a second-generation SD card television playback system. MOD Systems will announce GreenPlay-compatible device support from a variety of consumer electronics companies in 2010, including Blu-Ray players, televisions, and digital set-top boxes.

“The SD memory card offers a tremendous opportunity for the entertainment industry and retailers to distribute media securely, conveniently, and easily on a widely used format that consumers can take anywhere,” said Anthony Bay, chairman and CEO of MOD Systems. “Our new playback solution completes the digital entertainment ecosystem for secure content delivery specified by the SD Association, making it easy for retailers and entertainment companies to sell digital content, and consumers to acquire and playback movies, TV shows and music on any device.”

“While we anticipate DVDs remaining the most popular movie format for consumers for many years to come, the portability and convenience of digital content will become a strong part of the consumer offer in accessing media content, and will improve the customer experience as consumers look for new, more convenient ways to access their entertainment content,” said Alex Camara, vice president and general manager of NCR Entertainment. “Working together with MOD Systems, we are laying the groundwork for a fast and easy digital download solution for consumers. We have already taken important steps in evangelizing this technology by introducing NCR digital download kiosks and by designing our BLOCKBUSTER Express™ DVD kiosks with SD memory cards in mind. As we continue to work with MOD Systems on the at-home consumer experience, we are also establishing a point-of-purchase presence for this technology in retailers around the world.”

GreenPlay® Support in 2010
MOD Systems has partnered with Sonic Solutions (NASDAQ: SNIC) to add GreenPlay support to the company’s Roxio CinePlayer software application, a full-featured Blu-ray Disc and DVD player for PCs offering high-definition playback and premium audio features. Beginning in the first quarter of 2010, MOD Systems will distribute a version of CinePlayer loaded onto SD cards to enable playback without requiring consumers to install a new player application.

The GreenPlay PC Player software allows digital entertainment content on SD cards to play on any PC, notebook or netbook equipped with a secure SD slot. To ensure playback compatibility on a wide range of PCs, MOD Systems will offer an SD card to USB converter in 2010. MOD Systems will also introduce the second generation of its GreenPlay SD card digital media player as a white-label set-top box for retailers, available from select OEM/ODM vendors in 2010. MOD and Toshiba Corporation developed the current SD card set-top box being used in retailer technical trials.

The MOD Systems and NCR Corporation (NYSE: NCR) Retail Digital Entertainment Platform allows consumers to choose from thousands of movies and TV shows stored in a kiosk, quickly download the title to an SD card, and play the movie on a television or PC. Last fall MOD Systems and NCR introduced a technical trial of digital downloads from kiosks that offers new and more convenient ways for consumers to purchase, rent and play entertainment titles. The companies are expanding their pilots to additional retailers in 2010 in both the U.S. and Japan.
