RCDb and PayPal X Power eBay Companion TV Experience for the Tablet

RCDb and eBay Leverage PayPal X Adaptive Payments APIs to Make It Easy for Consumers to Purchase Products Related to TV Content

SAN FRANCISCO–INNOVATE 2010 — Building on its relationship with PayPal, Related Content Database, Inc. (RCDb), the next generation television and content metadata platform, unveiled at PayPal X Innovate, a second screen eBay application for the cable television industry.

The new application uses PayPal X Adaptive Payments APIs and RCDb time based metadata to allow consumers to purchase on eBay related products presented during a TV show on cable television.

The presentation of the related products is synchronized using RDCb data and EBIF, the cable and television industry standard for interactivity. The application is driven by RCDb time-based metadata which provides product information tied to specific moments and scenes in a TV show or movie, allowing dynamic linking to relevant eBay auctions.

The application was demonstrated on an Apple iPad® as an EBIF-synchronized second-screen experience, also available on other tablet and mobile devices. The same application may also be utilized in a same screen experience.

“Merchandising is becoming a more important revenue streams for Hollywood studios, and product placements are now common place in television shows’ creative design and development,” said Zane Vella, CEO of RCDb. “It only makes sense to make the enjoyment of premium content “actionable”, so that consumers can – at their leisure and in context connect with the shows, related content and products. eBay is a great marketplace to bring to the table.”

“Televisions are being connected to the Internet and both programmers and distributors need monetization platforms to power these new experiences,” said Gene Alston, director of business development at PayPal. “RCDb provides a flexible solution and we’re pleased they’re powering that solution with PayPal,” he added.

Part of the PayPal X platform, the Adaptive Payments API is a set of building blocks that gives developers the tools to create highly customized payment services. The API will change where and how people can make payments, how recipients get compensated, and how programmers and distributors can add revenue streams to content monetization.
