US FPD Conference Keynotes to Address Economic Recovery and the Future of CE Retail
University of San Diego Professor James D. Hamilton and Goldman Sach’s Matthew J. Fassler Set the Stage for This Year’s Event
SANTA CLARA, CALIF, February 2, 2011 — DisplaySearch unveiled today the keynote speakers for its 13th annual US FPD Conference “Display Industry Growth: Get Back to Where It Once Belonged” on March 1-2, 2011 in San Diego, California. Specifically, James D. Hamilton, Professor of Economics at the University of California, San Diego, and Matthew J. Fassler, Managing Director, Goldman, Sachs and Company, will share their insights and unique perspectives on recovering from the recession and the future of consumer electronics retail, respectively. Each presentation will highlight key trends relevant to that day’s sessions; Day 1 covering global supply chains and technology, and Day 2 covering end markets.
”We’re pleased to welcome Professor Hamilton and Mr. Fassler, who will set the stage at our upcoming US FPD Conference,” noted Paul Semenza, DisplaySearch Senior Vice President of Analyst Services. “Through both his academic work and his blog, Econbrowser, Professor Hamilton is known for his analysis of business cycles and macroeconomics. Mr. Fassler’s investment research into electronics retail, including consumer electronics and office supplies, affords him a unique perspective on retail trends.”
Tuesday, March 1: “Will there be a Great Recovery from the Great Recession?” James D. Hamilton, Professor of Economics at University of California, San Diego
Professor Hamilton will discuss his views on the Great Recession of 2007-2009. The financial instability and collapse in the housing market are without precedent in recent US experience, and monetary policy is completely powerless to provide the boost to economic activity that helped get us out of other recessions. The balance sheets of both consumers and firms will take time to recover, and unemployment will come down painfully slowly in the US. Prospects for inflation in the newly industrialized countries are quite different from those in the developed economies. Challenges ahead include European sovereign debt, China’s property bubble, and unwinding the foreclosures, public debts, and the Federal Reserve’s bloated balance sheet in the US.
Wednesday, March 2: “CE Retail: What Kind of Future?” Matthew J. Fassler, Managing Director, Goldman, Sachs and Company
Mr. Fassler will provide an overview on how traditional CE retailers have struggled to drive profitable growth, despite an economic recovery, amidst product cycle volatility and significant emerging channel shifts. During the presentation he will discuss what the macro backdrop says about the sales outlook and how evolving TV dynamics like new features and ASP declines can impact channel share. In addition Mr. Fassler will share his thoughts on how retailers can monetize emerging technologies by participating in new revenue streams that offset the impact of falling ASPs, as well as if tablets will enhance or undermine traditional big-box retailers.
