The Pavement Moves into 3D Blu-ray
The Pavement, London’s premier digital media and motion graphics production company, has moved into 3D Blu-ray production. Optimum Releasing and Lifetime Productions were the first to utilise the new service for ‘The Lovers’ Guide 3D – Igniting the Fire’, which is also the first Blu-ray 3D title to be commissioned and produced in the UK.
The Pavement’s services now include encoding, design, authoring and QC of stereoscopic material for Blu-ray 3D and anaglyph DVD production, all of which are managed entirely in-house. Offering a comprehensive – 3D solution was a natural progression for The Pavement, and the company is already well versed in HD production. Encoding and authoring kits have been upgraded to Sonic Professional 3D Authoring Systems, and the QC suites upgraded so that projects can be reviewed throughout all stages of production. The company spent the last half of 2010 testing the process, in order to fully understand the format, before launching the service.
With 11 years at the forefront of the industry – The Pavement has a reputation for breaking new ground, including creating the UK’s first fully interactive BD-Live Blu-ray Disc for U2 – ‘U2360 at the Rose Bowl’ in 2010, the first full-length multi-angle music DVD for Underworld – ‘Everything Everything’ in 2000 and being the first company to make UMDs for Sony Computer Entertainment outside of Sony. Their DVD for the Arctic Monkeys went on to win Best Music DVD at the NME Awards in 2008.
Out on 7th February, the ‘Lovers Guide 3D – Igniting Desire’, was turned around in just two weeks on reception of masters, allowing time for a Valentine’s Day release. It was tested by American-based BluFocus – the facility that assessed functionality and compatibility of the ‘Avatar’ Blu-ray 3D – ensuring the Blu-ray 3D was compatible and legal to the Blu-ray 3D Specification.
As one of the first companies in the UK and Europe to have Blu-ray 3D capabilities, The Pavement is also working alongside Goldcrest New York, who have been providing stereoscopic post production since spring last year.
Managing Director, The Pavement, Andy Evans, commented: “There’s a huge buzz in the industry about 3D, as the number of crews shooting in stereoscopic is growing exponentially, and we can also take 2D content and reversion it to 3D. Blu-ray 3D does have its perils in these early days of a new format, but we’ve worked round those and taken time to understand exactly what can and can’t be done. The bottom line is that we’re now the first in the UK to do what only Hollywood has managed to achieve in 2010.
This move into 3D underlines The Pavement’s ongoing commitment to take the lead into the deploying the latest industry technology. Andy Evans is speaking about his 3D experience at the Screen Digest, PEVE, Conference in London this March.
