Get connected – Philips brings smart TV to the home

Barcelona, Spain – As one of the foremost players in the field of connected TVs, Philips is showing that TVs can be much more than just a one-way channel for TV shows and movies. With one of the most comprehensive smart TV packages available, this year’s Philips TVs are becoming superconnected media portals that can hook you up with online content; stream music, photos and videos from your tablet, smart phone or laptop; and store programs and movies on your hard drive on demand.

Built on the four pillars of SimplyShare, Control, Net TV and Program, Philips’ Smart TV is now available on the new Philips 6000, 7000, 8000, 9000 and Cinema 21:9 Platinum and Gold series TVs. With Smart TV you can easily access a rich gallery of online apps. These will connect you to virtual movie rental stores for instant movie-nights, enable you to share your experiences with family and friends via Facebook (available soon) or Twitter, let you control your TV using your smart phone or tablet, and help you manage your content as you see fit.

SimplyShare – connectivity begins with sharing
Philips’ Smart TV enables your Philips TV to communicate with all of your WiFi-enabled gadgets, including phones, laptops, tablets and home computers. It can play any file that your PC can play, thanks to SongBird and its completely up-to-date set of codecs for reading all file types without fuss. You can display photos and play video on your big-screen TV, in gloriously deep contrast and in full color, and set up music playlists to be streamed directly from your own digital collection. Also thanks to your Smart TV’s WiFi capability, it can stream audio and visual content from the net.

Multiview allows comfortable viewing of multiple content sources at once so you can watch a TV program and keep up with the latest sports results via Net TV.

Connectivity under control
Easily and intuitively controlling content is one of the four pillars of the Smart TV concept. Whether you want to browse online content, scroll through your locally stored files or just change the channel, you have a range of choices in how you interface with your Philips TV. You can, of course, use your remote control – but you can also use your smart phone (iOS or Android) or tablet with the Philips smart phone App, or even use a wireless keyboard to navigate through various menus or enter text. This ensures true flexibility and connectivity, and means that your Philips Smart TV really does integrate seamlessly with the rest of your life.

Net TV: catch-up TV, games and movies on demand
Philips’ Smart TVs give you a smarter way of choosing what show or movie to watch – and when to watch it. All Philips Smart TVs have Net TV, an interactive on-screen platform for selecting programs and accessing apps. Net TV also connects you with online video stores, so you can choose, pay for and watch premium movies all via your TV. Net TV offers video stores by Videoland, VideoFutur, Film2Home as well as iConcerts and Cartoon Network.

Just missed your favorite TV program? Simply use Net TV to visit your favorite broadcaster’s Catch-up TV app and browse for TV shows whenever you want to watch them. Available catch-up TV apps include those from ARD, ZDF, Pro7, Sat1, RTL, UitzendingGemist, ARTE, France24, Antena3 and TV3. With Philips’ rich AppGallery, Net TV is not only your portal to TV and movies, but also to infotainment sources, games, and more online content and videos. And thanks to Philips’ advanced 3D Super Resolution technology, which automatically sharpens incoming images and eliminates discolored blotches and patches, you can be sure that all of your favorite contents looks great on the big screen.

Program, pause, record
Wondering what to watch tonight? Philips’ Smart TVs have replaced long lists of channels and shows with the Electronic Program Guide (EPG), an intuitive overview of what’s on that helps you decide what to watch. With Picture-in-Picture viewing, you can continue watching TV while browsing the Program Guide. The Smart USB Recording feature means you can pause even live TV while you answer the phone or fix a snack. The Smart TV records digital broadcast content onto your external hard drive, so that you can start watching again from exactly where you left off. What if you’re going out for the evening? Via the EPG, you can program the Smart TV to record a show so you can watch it later.

Philips is the innovator in Smart TV
Philips Smart TV is the latest offering from a company with an impressive track-record of innovation around connectivity with TVs. At the 2008 IFA trade show, Philips presented its first App home page, which included apps from a wide range of partners such as YouTube™. This innovation first evolved into Net TV before becoming Smart TV. Philips’ success is based on its application of extensive consumer research into how online content could best be brought to TV screens.

Smart TV at a glance
Seamless control: specially developed Apps help you control the TV with your smart phone or tablet. Besides the normal remote control functionalities, they enable easy text entry, better direct access and pushing pictures towards the TV.

A world of apps: Net TV is an interactive on-screen platform for selecting programs, downloading content from online stores and accessing a range of apps. Apps include video stores by Videoland, VideoFutur, Film2Home as well as iConcerts and Cartoon Network. Catch-up TV Apps are available from major broadcasters such as ARD, ZDF, Pro7, Sat1, RTL, UitzendingGemist, ARTE, France24, Antena3 and TV3.

Intuitive programming: The Electronic Program Guide (EPG) presents an intuitive overview of all your programming options, making it easy choose your entertainment. Also, thanks to Smart USB Recording, you can pause live TV and record shows to watch later.
