The NPD Group Acquires In-Stat, Expanding Its Technology Analyst Business

Deal Enhances Coverage in Mobile Internet and Digital Entertainment

PORT WASHINGTON, NEW YORK, April 1, 2011—The NPD Group today announced that it has finalized the acquisition of In-Stat, an analyst research company focused on the mobile internet and digital entertainment industries. As the newest addition to NPD’s analyst-based services, In-Stat will operate in conjunction with DisplaySearch, an NPD Group Company, to provide global technology analysis and information for a growing client base.

Backed by 30 years of experience in the technology sector, In-Stat offers reports and advisory services on the rapidly converging world of mobile phones, connected devices, and digital entertainment. Its clients include technology vendors, equipment manufacturers, service providers, and media companies. By offering information on the technology ecosystem, including forecasts and analysis, In-Stat also complements NPD’s existing consumer and retail sales tracking services for the technology and entertainment industries.

With the acquisition, In-Stat joins NPD’s growing portfolio of analyst businesses, including DisplaySearch, Solarbuzz, and Connected Intelligence. All of the businesses cover rapidly changing technology industries that have complex global supply chains and evolving endmarket behaviors, such as devices and hardware, digital content and usage, and energy and the environment.

In-Stat will keep its brand name, and the team will report to Tim Bush, General Manager of The NPD Group’s Technology Analyst Business. As a result of the acquisition, clients will be able to leverage more reports, information, and expertise from both In-Stat and DisplaySearch. By operating in partnership with DisplaySearch, In-Stat will gain access to an extended network of sales and research support around the world, especially in Asia and Europe.

“With the acquisition of In-Stat, NPD is offering unique information on the intersection of hardware, content, and distribution,” noted Bush. “In-Stat’s world-class team of analysts brings deep industry knowledge that will enable us to help our clients understand and identify business opportunities.”

Mark Kirstein, who will continue to serve as In-Stat’s President, added, “We look forward to joining The NPD Group’s growing Technology Analyst Business. This change will help us to better support the needs of our clients and significantly extend our services globally.”
