Loewe Selects Trident’s DTV Chipset Solutions to Power New High-End “Individual” Line of 3D HD Televisions

The New Individual Compose 3D Line of TVs Takes Advantage of Trident’s Best in Class Motion Estimation and Motion Compensation Technologies and Flexible Design

SUNNYVALE, Calif., Sept. 13, 2011 — Trident Microsystems, Inc. (NASDAQ: TRID), a leading provider of set-top box and TV semiconductor solutions, today announced that the Trident PNX5130 has been chosen to power Loewe’s newly announced Individual Compose 3D line of HD televisions. Loewe’s Individual Compose 3D offers full-HD, 400Hz, 3D motion picture display, individual configuration for various living arrangements, energy efficiency, and new on-screen menu and multimedia features.

“Trident’s PNX5130 DTV solution delivers superior picture quality, including the most advanced motion-compensated 3D,” said Roland Bohl, Vice President of R&D at Loewe. “Our customers expect the best Picture Quality possible from a Loewe TV set. Bringing this entitlement also to the new 3D generation with no compromises on motion sharpness and naturalness of the 3D picture was therefore a logical step and focus of our development efforts.”

“The new Individual Compose 3D series benefits from the advantages of existing key features of Trident’s PNX51xx series, such as our unique dimming algorithm for low power, halo-artifact reduction, and contrast enhancements, and takes the viewer experience to the next level by adding 3D support,” said Dirk Wieberneit, Senior Vice President and General Manager of the Trident TV Business Unit. “By working closely with the Loewe team, for example to further improve the dimming algorithm performance, we were able to adapt our core technology to meet their particular needs and help them bring to market a very high-end and feature-rich LED backlit television.”

About the PNX5130 Chipset
Based on the successful PNX5100 architecture, which is widely recognized for its outstanding motion-compensated frame rate converter (MEMC) performance, the PNX5130 includes next-generation Motion Accurate Picture processing (MAPP) technology in combination with 2D (local) dimming and 3DTV. The flexible architecture supports all popular 3DTV conversion formats for line and frame interleaved displays, including shutter glass control output. The PNX5130’s powerful media processors can be used to adjust the depth of stereoscopic content or to execute the 3DTV algorithms of your choice. The PNX5130 supports 2D or local dimming with LED backlights, for PDP-like contrast levels and power savings of up to 50% or more. Trident’s local dimming algorithm is fully configurable for any type of edge- or direct-lit backlight architecture, and the video output gain is locally compensated for the backlight segment settings.
