Rovi Corporation announced a new music data offering that combines music metadata from its AMG and Muze services, creating a superset of data from both acquisitions.
According to the statement, the new database, Rovi Music, is a single data source that provides multiple forms of data to support variety of devices and services across online services, service providers, and consumer electronic platforms, such as websites, social networking sites, mobile, PC and embedded applications. Rovi Music streamlines the delivery process for integrating high quality, consistent information to inform and influence consumers as they discover and experience music.
According to the “Global entertainment and media outlook: 2009-2013” report published on June 16, 2009 by PricewaterhouseCoopers, digital music distribution is estimated to increase from $7.6B in 2008 to $14.8B in 2013; Internet distribution is expected to comprise $8.8B; and mobile phone distribution is expected to reach $6B by 2013. Rovi Music is a flexible and scalable offering that enables businesses to capitalize on this opportunity by using metadata to market and increase sales and consumption of content.
“The worlds of Internet services and consumer devices are converging into one and consumers do not want to have to manage both separately,” said Corey Ferengul, EVP of product management and marketing for Rovi Corporation. “In this multi-screen world, companies need to have all of their products and services work cohesively to create an enjoyable environment for consumers to search, discover and acquire content. Rovi Music is the foundation for building consistency across their entire ecosystem.”
In addition to in-depth editorial data, Rovi Music provides short-form content elements, like headlines and product descriptions, optimized for CE, portable and mobile device types and applications. The Rovi Music database now holds more than 1.8 million pop and classical music albums and 16 million tracks, which is critical in today’s song-driven environment. Rovi’s music data is used in many online websites and consumer electronics devices to deliver a comprehensive music experience. This experience is enhanced by Rovi’s extensive relational links, enabling deep discovery and navigation and providing a personalized music experience.
Rovi Music is a part of the Rovi Data Solutions offering, a vast database of information on CDs, songs, DVDs, Blu-ray Discs, cover art, games, books, reviews, celebrity biographies, TV shows, sports and awards information, rich media and more.
