MHL Consortium Hosted First PlugFest Event to Drive Consistent and Reliable User Experience

PlugFest Hosted in Taipei, Taiwan from July 18-19, 2012

SUNNYVALE, Calif. — MHL, LLC, the entity responsible for administering the MHL Consortium and the adoption, licensing and promotion of the MHL® (Mobile High-Definition Link) specification, hosted its first-ever PlugFest event in Taipei, Taiwan from July 18-19, 2012. Nearly 80 attendees representing 26 companies were in attendance to test the interoperability of their MHL-enabled products in a private, round robin fashion. Manufacturers use the MHL Compliance Test Specification (CTS), a series of tests defined by the MHL Consortium, to help assess their compliance to the MHL Specification and ensure a high degree of interoperability between MHL-enabled devices.

MHL’s first PlugFest focused on strengthening the interoperability of the large ecosystem of MHL-enabled devices. Engineers working on similar products and tackling similar problems exchanged ideas to work together to optimize the best consumer experience. Attendees circulated among the stationary sink devices (e.g. TVs, monitors, AVRs), plugging them in and checking the performance of their source devices (e.g. phones and tablets), dongle and cable accessories. As a result, engineering teams were able to explore connectivity optimization across different manufacturers, which will help them improve their pre-production designs.

“It is an honor to have so many companies and people gather for the sole purpose of ensuring that their MHL-enabled devices work well with each other,” said Tim Wong, MHL Consortium President. “We clearly have a real ecosystem with not only a wide variety of CE and mobile products, but also geographical diversity on where these products are designed, manufactured and sold. I am truly happy to see everyone come together to ensure a better MHL user experience for consumers.”

Using only five wires, MHL technology delivers up to 1080p60fps uncompressed video with up to eight channels of digital audio while simultaneously charging the mobile device. Consumers can connect their MHL-enabled devices to the big screen to share HD videos or photos, play video games or work on business presentations, all while the device is also being charged. Consumers are also able to control MHL-enabled mobile devices using the existing DTV remote for general navigation and playback control, so you do not have to always be holding the mobile device to use it.

The MHL Consortium has over 140 adopters, founders and contributors supporting the MHL standard, including some of the largest consumer electronics and mobile device companies in the world. MHL-enabled products include adapters, automotive accessories, AV receivers, Blu-ray Disc™ players, cables, DTVs, monitors, projectors, smartphones, tablets, TV accessories and more. Since the retail introduction of the first MHL-enabled devices over a year ago, the MHL ecosystem continues to grow with a steady stream of product announcements.
