Some sad news today. It has come to our attention that Technicolor Home Entertainment Services is planning additional layoffs and will close its optical disc (CD, DVD, Blu-ray) replication and distribution facility in Olyphant, PA.
An official notice sent to the Pennsylvania Department of Labor & Industry indicates 160 people will be let go with the layoffs occurring between March 17th and May 1st. This follows a reduction of 96 workers almost a year ago and a succession of like moves in recent times.
According to published reports, this marks the death knell for the over one million square foot facility, which is now scheduled to close.
It’s worth noting that Technicolor continues to maintain similar manufacturing facilities in Guadalajara, Mexico (approx. 270K ft²), Huntsville, AL (approx. 1.7m ft²), Piaseczno, Poland (approx. 270K ft²) and Melbourne, Australia (approx. 50K ft²), with physical media remaining a significant business. To keep things in perspective, worldwide revenues from Technicolor’s DVD services operations topped $1.4 billion in 2016, with the company replicating over 1.55 billion optical discs (1.1 billion DVDs, 341 million Blu-rays, 134 million CDs).
We’ve reached out to Technicolor for confirmation and comment, but have yet to receive a reply.
