TP Vision brings HDR10+ support to the 2018 Philips TV range

Amsterdam January 25th 2018 – Exceptional picture quality will continue to be the focus throughout the Philips TV range in 2018 with TP Vision announcing that the recently introduced P5 picture processing engine will be featured in more product series, that the new 8000 sets will feature NanoLed technology and wide colour gamut panels and that HDR+10 compatibility will be offered on selected sets from Q2.

HDR10+ is a new standard that is backwards compatible with and effectively sits on top of the existing HDR10 standard.

2017 proved that the HDR10 standard can already deliver exceptionally results producing excellent black levels or peak white output to allow superb colour & contrast performance.

However, the ultimate performance of the HDR10 system is limited by it Static Tone Mapping which leads to inevitable compromises from scene to scene, requiring the content editing and production process to either prioritise – or average – shadow detail in dark scenes or highlight details in bright scenes,

HDR10+ features Dynamic Tone Mapping using dynamic metadata and allowing the contrast and colour curves for each scene to be set independently and optimised frame by frame.

Most importantly HDR10+ is backwards compatible. HDR10+ streams are capable of carrying both embedded static and dynamic metadata, so users of older sets can still enjoy the many benefits of HDR10.

HDR10+ is also an open standard and royalty free and therefore doesn’t include an additional cost that the manufacturer needs to pass on to the consumer.

The HDR10+ will be available on the new Philips 8000 TVs and 2018 OLED sets from the second quarter with more sets to follow during the year.

The recently launched and widely acclaimed Philips P5 picture processing engine enjoyed a stellar year in 2017, winning multiple PQ tests across the whole of Europe.

P5 brought an obvious and significant performance boost to Philips flagship OLED sets and will continue at the pinnacle of the company’s range but will also appear in more products in 2018 including being featured in the new 7000 and 8000 series sets plus all of the new OLED models.

P5 brings both a 25% increase in processing features and a 25% increase in processing power to give an overall 50% performance gain when compared with the existing Perfect Pixel Ultra HD engine.

The P5 engine has been designed to analyse and individually address each of the Five Pillars that together define overall picture quality: Source perfection, Sharpness, Color, Contrast and Motion.

With the power of five processors in one. P5 enjoys the sheer processing scale necessary to easily handle the masses of data delivered by Ultra HD and 4K images while the reduction from multiple chips to one also brings the faster transfer of processed data with better timing and improved control over the whole processing sequence.

P5’s improvements start at the source. With a high proportion of the content that feeds our televisions containing annoying visual imperfections such as noise and artefacts, the P5 Source Perfection corrects and reduces noise without introducing annoying blurring while the integrated Smart Bit Enhancement system eliminates banding by extending 8-bit video to near 14-bit precision resulting in smoother gradations, but without detail loss in other parts of the picture.

An improved MPEG meter also offers a more accurate measure of signal quality.

In the area of sharpness improvement, the P5 engine features a new Detail Meter and a new Detail Enhancer plus an improved Sharpness Meter. The Detail Enhancer up-scales any content into a sharper Ultra HD picture, resulting in a visibly more refined image with finer lines, and greater, deeper detail which combines to create better depth impression

With regards to colour processing the P5 engine includes an improved Gamut Mapping System.

The P5 engine also offers a significant improvement in contrast performance thanks to the inclusion of Hybrid Log Gamma (HLG) and HDR10+ processing, with a new local contrast enhancement system and a new ‘sparkle & darkel’ detection and reduction feature plus improved HDR up-scaling for non HDR content. P5 offers a significant improvement in PQ performance whatever panel technology is featured on a set and its inclusion will allow the new 7000, 8000 and OLED products to offer reference quality images for their market segments.
