Color CD-R Label Printing Capability Announced by Rimage at Intermedia World
San Francisco, CA, March 5, 1996 — CD-ROM software developers and manufacturers, government agencies and corporations will be able to print mono color laser quality labels onto CD-ROM and CD-Recordable discs with new one-color ribbons designed for the Rimage Perfect Image™ CD Printer. This product enhancement was announced today at the Intermedia World show. The printers and ribbons are available immediately for shipping from the company’s headquarters office in Minneapolis.
Priced approximately at $75 each, the red, blue and green ribbons will print a minimum of 2,000 CDs (or 1,000 when double printed). This high-quality color capability will provide companies with important visual cues for security or identification purposes. It will also enhance the appearance of corporate logo images.
The company simultaneously announced a price reduction for the printer. Now priced at $3,995, the Perfect Image CD Printer is the only thermal printer on the market.
“The interest in the Printer has been phenomenal since we introduced it a year ago,” said Mac McCorkle, Vice President of Marketing for Rimage Corporation. “The laser quality delivered by the Printer produces a cleaner and more durable image for CDs. Since the appearance of the disc is what an internal or external customer first sees, this capability is important to any CD-R or CD-ROM producer that cares about the visual impact of their CDs. We felt that by reducing the price, many more businesses could benefit from the professional surface decoration provided by the CD Printer.”
The graphics, company logos, and titles are easy to produce. A Windows 95 driver has been developed to allow printing on CDs from other applications, while giving the user full control of the printer/driver features. These features prevent inadvertent overprinting and allow double printing of an image to improve print quality on matte surfaces. “This keeps the production process simple, ” McCorkle explains.
Rimage Corporation, which provides a single source solution for hardware and software systems to record, store and distribute data on CD-ROM, diskette and tape, will also demonstrate the Perfect Image CD-R Automated Publishing System (APS) at the Intermedia Show.
The Windows 3.1/Win 95 Perfect Image APS is designed to automate the publishing of unique CDs or handle large quantity CD recording and printing. The only CD publishing system in the industry to automate movement of CD-R discs through the recording and printing operations, the Perfect Image APS consists of an in-line Rimage CD Printer connected through a docking station to a Kodak Disc Transporter. The Kodak Disc Transporter allows 2X or 6X recording and has a 75-disc capacity. The color capability is also available for the APS’ in-line printer.
“Rimage was able to create a ‘hands free’ environment by developing a unique software interface which dictates the movement of each disc from the recording mechanism to the printer and back to the to the Kodak Disc Transporter disc tray,” McCorkle said.
Minneapolis-based Rimage was founded in 1987 and has service, sales and manufacturing facilities in Boulder, CO, Mountain View, CA, Dietzenbach, Germany and a new office in Singapore. Among the company’s major products are digital publishing systems, diskette and CD-ROM duplication systems for unique and large quantity applications, finishing equipment, CD-ROM production systems and tape duplication systems.
