Green Technology Optical Data Storage TeraStack® Solution Patent Approved

The TeraStack Solution’s unique green technology captures, stores and archives terabytes of data in an optical data storage device about the size of a two-drawer file cabinet using only 600 watts of power.

Dallas, TX — June 15, 2010 — Today, Hie Electronics announces patent approval from the U.S. Commerce Department’s Patent and Trademark Office for its TeraStack® Solution. The TeraStack Solution’s unique green technology captures, stores and archives terabytes of data in a device about the size of a two-drawer file cabinet using only 600 watts of power.

“Our TeraStack Solution brings energy efficiency to optical data storage and creates green jobs, advancing U.S. competitiveness and innovation,” says Patrick Humm, Chairman and President of Hie Electronics, a Texas-based company. Humm testified before the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Science and Technology on the importance of strengthening regional innovation in the U.S., discussing green jobs and American-based innovation in September 2009.

Hie Electronics received Patent Number US7673309 for the TeraStack® Solution, nicknamed “a data center in a box.” A unique internal robotic system allows the TeraStack Solution to retrieve archived data from multiple TeraStacks of Blu-ray™ media in the compact device. Hie Electronics packs online storage, nearline backup, and offline archive into the single cabinet TeraStack® Solution, significantly reducing the data management requirement of several racks of equipment and disparate systems.

The use of long life Blu-ray media in the TeraStack® Solution significantly reduces data migration requirements and delivers up to a 90 percent energy cost savings when compared with data storage technologies, enterprise tape libraries and hard drive systems. In recognition, the company is the recipient of the Frost and Sullivan “2009 North American Data Storage Technologies Green Excellence Award” in Technology for its ability to reduce energy costs with its storage technology.

The company is also an Energy Star Small Business Network Participant, and a stakeholder in the Energy Star Enterprise Storage Initiative. Energy Star™ is a government-backed program helping businesses and individuals protect the environment through superior energy efficiency.

The TeraStack® Solution positions an organization’s data storage for growth with an energy efficient solution for secure and easily accessible online, nearline, and offline data storage management. The multi-tiered system offers up to 78 terabytes of high speed enterprise class application hosting, high speed RAID storage, and nearline optical data storage scalable to petabytes, with unlimited offline data storage and data transport capabilities.
