RealD Delivers Approximately $47 Million in Opening Weekend Domestic Gross for Disney Pixar’s “Toy Story 3”
RealD is Highest Grossing Platform Across 2D and 3D
LOS ANGELES–RealD Inc. announced today that theatres outfitted with RealD 3D cinema systems generated approximately $47 million of the total domestic box office for Disney Pixar’s “Toy Story 3,” which opened #1 with an estimated total domestic box office of $109 million. RealD-equipped theatres made up the weekend’s highest grossing cinema platform, generating the majority of 3D box office and a larger box office than all 2D screens combined.
“RealD box office performance demonstrated that moviegoers of all ages experienced the newest addition to the beloved ‘Toy Story’ series in RealD 3D more than any other platform,” said Michael V. Lewis, chairman and CEO of RealD. “We congratulate Disney PIXAR on this record setting opening and wish them continued success.”
In conjunction with the release of “Toy Story 3” RealD introduced kid-sized 3D glasses in the USA and Canada. Sealed in individual packaging to ensure they are sanitary and quality assured, kid-sized RealD 3D glasses are smaller versions of standard RealD 3D glasses and designed to fit children 8 years of age and under. Kid-sized RealD 3D glasses are also available in select international markets.
“Toy Story 3” welcomes Woody (voice of Tom Hanks), Buzz (voice of Tim Allen) and the whole gang back to the big screen as Andy prepares to depart for college and his loyal toys find themselves in…day care! These untamed tots with their sticky little fingers do not play nice, so it’s all for one and one for all as plans for the great escape get underway. A few more faces—some plastic, some plush—join the adventure, including iconic swinging bachelor and Barbie’s counterpart Ken (voice of Michael Keaton), a thespian hedgehog named Mr. Pricklepants (voice of Timothy Dalton) and a pink, strawberry-scented teddy bear called Lots-o’-Huggin’ Bear (voice of Ned Beatty). Directed by Lee Unkrich (co-director of “Toy Story 2” and “Finding Nemo”), produced by Pixar veteran Darla K. Anderson (“Cars,” “Monsters, Inc.”), and written by Academy Award®-winning screenwriter Michael Arndt (Little Miss Sunshine), “Toy Story 3” is a comical new adventure.
