Adaptec Buys Toast Technology

Mac CD-R Technology Now Part of Adaptec Optical Storage Family

MILPITAS, Calif. — February 26, 1997 — Adaptec, Inc. has announced an agreement to purchase award-winning Toast technology for $7.5 million. Developed in Germany, Toast CD-ROM Pro has become the world’s de facto standard for Macintosh-based CD-Recordable (CD-R) software. Toast joins Adaptec’s successful family of Windows-based CD-R software products CD-Creator and Easy CD-Pro.

According to S. Sundaresh, Adaptec’s vice-president marketing, “Adding Toast moves us closer to our goal of providing the world’s undisputed best-of-class software for current and future optical technologies. We expect to leverage this great technology into additional optical storage solutions, including packet writing, audio mastering, and DVD.”

Mac’s enjoy special importance in the CD-R market because of CD-R’s wide acceptance in graphics houses and the pre-press industry, traditional strongholds of that platform. Adaptec indicated that ownership of leading software programs on both Windows and Mac platforms clearly points the way toward cross-platform compatibility for CD-R users.

Markus Fest, the original developer of Toast, added that “the combination of our CD-Recording, audio mastering, and packet writing technology with Adaptec’s leadership in optical storage software promises exciting new solutions for future optical peripherals.”
