Avail-TVN Rolls Out 3D VOD Service

3D Video On Demand Offering From Avail-TVN Does Not Require Set-Top Box Upgrades

SHERMAN OAKS, CA–(November 16, 2010) – Avail-TVN, the largest digital media services company in North America, today announced the availability of its 3D Video On Demand (VOD) movie offering. The new service launches today with Verizon FiOS and will offer feature films from most of the major studios. Avail-TVN’s 3D VOD service does not require any additional equipment or upgrades to service providers’ existing equipment.

Avail-TVN will deliver the most popular 3D titles to affiliates over the coming months, including: The Last Airbender; Saw: The Final Chapter; Alpha and Omega; and Piranha.

“Over the last year, 3D movies in the theatre have created enormous excitement and we are pleased to bring the immersive 3D experience into the living room,” said Doug Sylvester, chief strategy officer, Avail-TVN. “Avail-TVN’s investment in its next generation platform is enabling us to commercialize a scalable service that allows our customers to meet growing consumer demand for 3D.”

Avail-TVN is developing its 3D services to work with its service provider customers’ existing infrastructure, including encoders and set-top boxes. Only minor over the air (OTA) software updates are required for set-top boxes. The company is using frame-compatible stereoscopic compression to transmit 3D files at the same rate and with the same bandwidth requirements as 2D HD, while also providing the industry’s richest 3D experience. Titles are available in both MPEG-2 and MPEG-4.

Pricing and Availability
Retail prices of 3D movies are generally $1.00 to $2.50 more than HD titles. The number of new release and library VOD movies available in 3D is expected to grow significantly in 2011 as the base of 3D TV sets expands. Avail-TVN is offering operators its 3D Movies Service as part of a complete line of 3D services that will be supplemented with 3D Events and 3D Linear channels in 2011.
