RealD announced the honorees for its second annual “RealD Innovation in 3D Award,” James Cameron and Jon Landau, recognizing their contribution to 3D cinema with the 2009 feature film release of Avatar. The award was presented to Landau by RealD Chairman and CEO Michael V. Lewis at ShoWest’s final night banquet and awards ceremony in Las Vegas.
The “RealD Innovation in 3D Award” is an annual recognition to honor filmmakers that contribute to digital 3D and embody the pioneering and creative spirit the technology brings to life in cinema and other applications. Last year’s award honorees were Henry Selick, LAIKA and Focus Features for their work on the feature film Coraline, the first stop-motion animated feature ever produced from inception in 3D.
“Avatar is a testament to the 3D vision and craftsmanship James and Jon worked tirelessly on for a decade,” said Lewis. “Their trailblazing development of new technology and use of 3D to draw people inside their fantastic journey has truly brought the magic back to cinema.”
“We are thrilled to receive this honor from RealD,” said Landau. “RealD has been a leader driving quality digital 3D exhibition and for that we are eternally grateful.”
The top-grossing worldwide feature film of all-time, Avatar takes us to a spectacular world beyond imagination, where a reluctant hero embarks on an epic adventure, ultimately fighting to save the alien world he has learned to call home. James Cameron, the Oscar-winning director of “Titanic,” first conceived the film 15 years ago, when the means to realize his vision did not yet exist. Now, after four years of production, Avatar, a live action film with a new generation of special effects, delivers a fully immersive cinematic experience of a new kind, where the revolutionary technology invented to make the film disappears into the emotion of the characters and the sweep of the story. Avatar stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Michelle Rodriguez, and Sigourney Weaver. The film is written by James Cameron and produced by Cameron and Jon Landau.
