Home Entertainment Spending Rises More Than 11% in 2019 Third Quarter Overall Digital Revenue Grew 19% to Surpass $5 Billion in the Quarter Strong Gains Made by Digital Purchases and Subscription Streaming

November 8, 2019 – Consumers spent $6.3 billion on movies and TV shows for home entertainment in the third quarter of 2019, up 11.3 percent from the same period a year earlier. Digital spending continued to be the driving force, rising almost 20 percent overall. The increase in U.S. home entertainment spending in the quarter came amid a 1.5 percent drop in box-office performance for the films released in the period. The result compared to $5.7 billion spent in the third quarter of 2018.

Through the first nine months of 2019, spending rose 8.3 percent to $18.3 billion compared to $16.9 billion in the nine-month period a year earlier.

Among the highlights for the Third Quarter of 2019:

In the quarter, subscription streaming climbed nearly 25 percent, to $4.1 billion. For the first three quarters of the year, total digital is up 17% to $15 billion. Digital transactions and subscription streaming continue to offset declines in physical sales and rentals.

Third quarter spending on EST grew 13.1 percent overall, with sales increasing across categories. Theatrical EST grew 15 percent in the quarter, while EST spending on TV titles rose more than 7 percent. Among the most collected TV series were Yellowstone, The Big Bang Theory, Game of Thrones, Big Little Lies and Outlander.
