The Society For Information Display Announces Keynote Speakers For Display Week 2014 In San Diego

High Caliber Line Up to Bring Fresh Insight on Latest Developments and Innovations within Display Industry

CAMPBELL, Calif., Feb. 26, 2014 — The Society for Information Display (SID), the leading global organization dedicated to the advancement of electronic display technology, today unveiled the keynote speakers for Display Week 2014, which is taking place at the San Diego Convention Center from June 1-6.  The display industry leaders opening Display Week include: Mr. Wang Dongsheng, Chairman of BOE Technology Group Co.; Dr. Michael Heckmeier, Sr. Vice President of Liquid Crystals Research and Development at Merck; and Dr. Kazumasa Nomoto, Sr. General Manager of Sony’s Device Development Division.

Kicking off the keynote session on Tuesday, June 3 at 8:30 a.m. will be BOE’s Mr. Wang, who will focus on “Trends in China’s Display Industry and BOE’s Role.”  Specifically, he will address how China is playing an increasingly important role as a display manufacturer and consumer in the global industry.  BOE, as a leading display enterprise based in China, has become a rising star. Mr. Wang will call for strengthening cooperation within the display industry across the world, enabling new application markets and opportunity both inside and outside of China.

Next, Dr. Heckmeier of Merck will speak on “The Role of Materials in New Display Technology Developments.” Despite the fact that the first liquid crystals were discovered more than 125 years ago, innovation in liquid crystal materials continues to improve display device performance.  More recently, OLED displays have emerged as a more serious contender in flat-panel displays.  OLED technology has applications in both mobile devices and in television, with advances in materials again driving much of the development. Dr. Heckmeier’s talk will take a look back at the role materials have played in the display industry and will look forward at how materials may continue to lead to necessary performance gains in both LCDs and OLED displays, as well as in non-display applications.

Wrapping up the morning’s keynote addresses, Sony’s Dr. Nomoto will take the stage to speak on the subject “Toward an Immersive Image Experience.”  Dr. Nomoto will review how recent progress in technologies for higher resolution, higher frame rate, wider color gamut and higher dynamic range have dramatically improved the quality of both image capture and display.  This technological evolution, along with the development of content delivery, can provide an unprecedented immersive image experience.  Dr. Nomoto will talk about Sony’s activities in these fields and some of its recent technologies for 4K LCDs, 4K OLEDs and 4K projectors, as well as share some of Sony’s views on where the future of this industry is headed.

A separate must-see event is the annual SID Best in Show and Display Industry Awards Luncheon, which will be held on Wednesday, June 4.  During that time, Dr. Paul Debevec of the Department of Computer Science, University of Southern California, will deliver a dynamic presentation titled: “Avatar to Gravity: Lighting Photoreal Digital Actors.”  Specifically, Dr. Debevec will describe how the Light Stage scanning systems and HDRI lighting techniques developed at the USC Institute for Creative Technologies have helped create digital actors in a wide range of recent films.

The keynote sessions and Award Luncheon are just two of the many events that attendees can experience.  For more information on the various programs that are occurring during Display Week, visit www.displayweek.org.  Media interested in attending Display Week, please contact Marie Labrie or Angie Kellen at DisplayWeekPR@mcapr.com.  Companies interested in exhibiting/sponsoring at Display Week should contact Jim Buckley at jbuckley@pcm411.com (if headquartered in Europe or the Americas); or Sue Chung at schung@ghtconnections.com (if headquartered in Asia).
