Rovi and MStar Unveil DTV Integrated Circuits Certified for DivX Plus Streaming
Number One DTV IC Supplier to Drive Advanced Streaming Support on Leading Connected TVs
Santa Clara, Calif. – 12/23/2013 – Rovi Corporation (NASDAQ: ROVI) today announced that MStar, a leading global semiconductor company for display and digital home solutions, plans to release DTV chipsets certified for DivX Plus Streaming™. As a major supplier to the world’s leading consumer electronics manufacturers, MStar can help drive the integration of Rovi’s advanced adaptive streaming format in a range of connected TVs and build the broad device support needed to power flexible, high-quality entertainment offerings from service providers.
DivX Plus Streaming brings a robust feature set to streaming media that is typically characteristic of the Blu-ray-like consumer experience. This feature set includes multi-language subtitles and audio tracks, trick-play track for smooth fast forward and rewind, chapter points for quick scene navigation, and resume playback across devices. To help eliminate buffering or the “spinning wheel”, DivX Plus Streaming includes Dynamic Resolution Scaling, which provides smooth and seamless transitions between different resolutions and bit rates. Dynamic Resolution Scaling helps consumers enjoy quick load times and continuous play even in low or fluctuating bandwidth environments.
“DivX Plus Streaming helps extend our ability to provide our customers with the latest technologies for delivering superior quality entertainment experiences,” said Bill Hsiung, Head of Corporate SW Marketing Dept., MStar. “Collaborations with media innovators like Rovi are part of the reason MStar continues to stay ahead of the competition and, ultimately, drive smart TV SoC solutions that provide consumers a wide variety of value-added services.”
“As an industry leader in DTV platforms, MStar can significantly add to the momentum for DivX Plus Streaming with consumer electronics manufacturers,” said Dr. Kanaan Jemili, senior vice president, product management, Rovi. “Our expanded relationship with MStar can help provide leading manufacturers a streamlined path to support premium video services and accelerate the availability of a dramatically improved over-the-top entertainment experience for consumers.”
With DivX Plus Streaming certification being awarded to MStar chipsets, DTV OEMs can easily support a variety of service providers and a range of deployment models including purchase, electronic sell-through, rental, subscription, and advertising supported.
DivX Plus Streaming has been approved by studios and adopted by companies helping fuel over-the-top entertainment distribution. The protected adaptive streaming format has gained the support of IC vendors and CE OEMs. In addition, DivX Plus Streaming has been selected to power a range of video services including Dixons Retail’s KNOWHOW Movies and Sainsbury’s Entertainment in the UK, Media Markt’s Videodownloadshop in Germany, and a Mei-Ah and China Mobile-powered service on Android mobile devices. The solution has also been selected to power new services launching soon in China and Japan from STM and Kinema-Junposha respectively. The DivX DRM (digital rights management) solution, as used with DivX Plus Streaming, is also approved by the DECE (Digital Entertainment Content Ecosystem consortium) for UltraViolet.
