Panasonic Corporation announced that it will launch six new Blu-ray Disc (BD) / DVD recorders compatible with the new BDXL format.
According to the statement, the new DMR-BWT3100 (2TB HDD), DMR-BWT2100 (1TB HDD), DMR-BWT1100 (500GB HDD), DMR-BW890 (1TB HDD), DMR-BW690 (500GB HDD) and DMR-BR590 (500GB HDD) will be available in Japan on September 15, 2010.
All of the units can record BD-R XL 100GB triple-layer (TL) and 128 GB (quadruple-layer) discs as well as rewrite BD-RE XL 100 GB triple-layer (TL) discs. Additionally, the DMR-BWT3100, DMR-BWT2100 and DMR-BWT1100 models offer Blu-ray 3D playback.
As a matter of background, a 100 GB BDXL disc can hold roughly 12 hours of terrestrial digital HD video (17 Mbps), 8 hours and 40 minutes of BS Digital HD (24 Mbps) or 17 hours and 20 minutes of BS Digital SD (12 Mbps).
