QC VIDEO ACCESSES NEW MARKETS AND OPTIMIZES EXISTING ONES WITH INSTALLATION OF THE OTARI CDP-64 LARGE-SCALE CD-R DUPLICATOR
— Acquisition of the new Otari CDP-64 state-of-the-art industrial-scale CD-R duplication system allows Toronto’s QC Video to add new services and increase its networking capability within the media industry —
REPLItech NORTH AMERICA, LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA, February 20, 2001 — QC Video, one of North America’s largest blank-media packaging companies, has purchased and installed the new Otari CDP-64 large-scale CD-R duplication system. The system was purchased late last year and, after customization on site by Otari engineers, was running at full operational capacity by January, ready to serve as the core of new business-to-business services that QC Video plans to market. These new services include supporting QC Video’s existing customer base of blank media clients and providing an entirely new level of customer support to regional and international CD replication companies in the form of handling short runs for them and their clients economically and efficiently.
“We could not have done this without the CDP-64,” observes Bill Blyth, President of QC Video, which was founded in 1989, and which packages and prints over seven million units of blank VHS video products per month. “We got into the CD-R business about a year and a half ago, which allowed us to further use our printing and packaging capabilities,” Blyth explains. “But the arrival of the CDP-64 really allows us to maximize our core competencies in new media markets. One of the most important aspects of that will be supporting CD customers by doing short-run business for them — runs of up to 1,000 units. We can already offer automated packaging and five-color on-disc printing. The addition of the CDP-64 gives us an equally highly automated manufacturing system that can keep up with our other technologies. The CDP-64 integrated very quickly into our operations.”
Otari’s excellent service and commitment to customer support assured that. Otari sent a crew of engineers to QC Video’s Toronto facility, both to install the CDP-64, test it, and to make custom adjustments for the company in aspects such as content security. “We’ve had long experience with Otari over the years,” Blyth says, noting that QC Video has over 70 Otari VHS loading machines in operation. “It’s not an easy decision to enter new markets, which have to be supported not only with new equipment and new expertise, but also with new marketing and sales. The confidence that has historically come from our association with Otari products contributed largely to our decision to enter the CD-R duplication market. Given our packaging and printing capabilities, it’s a natural fit. But the CDP-64 was the magic bullet.”
Using advanced 12X drives, the Otari CDP-64 Large-Scale CD-R Duplication Unit is designed to provide increased productivity more cost-effectively. Disc supply and master data acquisition are done on an 8-drive line unit basis to minimize drive idle time when changing discs. The CDP-64’s utilize Otari’s unique Automatic Disc Loading Mechanism, combined with a double feed prevention/detection system, enabling fast and reliable disc handling. In addition, the CDP-64 utilizes an enclosed, shock-floated chassis construction to keep CD-R drives free from dust, and the system is fully stand-alone, requiring only AC power and compressed air to operate. One operator can easily handle as many as eight CDP-64 systems simultaneously. Data acquisition from a master disc is done at a maximum of 40X speed. And these drives support various disc formats including CD-DA, CD-ROM, Video CD and CD Extra.
