Panasonic and RAIDIX create a data storage system on optical disks

New technology cooperation: Panasonic and RAIDIX announce a brand-new high-performance solution for hybrid data storage.

ST PETERSBURG – MOSCOW, RUSSIA: June 13, 2016 — RAIDIX, a leading provider of data storage systems, and Panasonic Russia teamed up to deliver a co-branded high-performance hybrid storage solution. The parties signed a Memorandum of Intent on June 2, 2016, in Moscow, announcing the beginning of a new technology cooperation.

Modern data centers require tools that would enable reliable data storage for decades. Panasonic responds to the challenge, delivering to enterprises the freeze-ray® long-term storage systems that cater to cold (rarely accessed) data.

Non-rewritable Archival Discs protect data against modification and provide a guaranteed storage period of up to 100 years. The latest version of freeze-ray® employs disks with 300 GB capacity, allowing to create a storage configuration of up to 1.9 PB in a standard 19” rack. In the mid-term prospective, Panasonic plans to extend Archival Disc capacity to 500 GB and 1 TB, ensuring multi-petabyte system scalability.

The freeze-ray® data storage system was developed by Panasonic in cooperation with Facebook, bridging the unique technology of high-density optical disks with solid experience of deploying storage systems in datacenters.

The shared Panasonic and RAIDIX project allows to bring the cutting-edge hardware technology on the next level, offering enterprises a comprehensive software and hardware solution for long-term hybrid storage of cold as well hot – frequently used – data.

As part of the project, RAIDIX will integrate directly with the freeze-ray® system without using intermediary third-party interfaces. Due to the RAIDIX smart tiering technology, the new hybrid system will switch hardware resources for storing different types of data. The freeze-ray® infrastructure will cater to cold data whereas RAIDIX will take care of hot data storage, delivering the utmost in availability, fault-tolerance and performance.

As a result, the highly reliable professional Panasonic equipment will operate based on RAIDIX software. The co-branded solution is scheduled for release in Q4 2016 and will be distributed worldwide through a global partner network.

“The goal of Panasonic–RAIDIX cooperation is to create an innovative data storage system that would optimize IT infrastructure costs. Thanks to smart resource allocation by RAIDIX and unique long-term storage by Panasonic, the end customer receives instant access to hot data and reliable fault-tolerant storage of cold, rarely used data”, – commented Alexander Katashov, Director General at RAIDIX.

Masato Nakamura, Vice President of Panasonic Russia, emphasized bright sales prospects of the new solution on the global markets: “Panasonic has been engaged in development of data writing and storage technology since the 1970s. The company has accumulated great experience in development and implementation of optical technologies. In cooperation with RAIDIX, we are planning to create an unparalleled, highly competitive solution with ambitious sales goals and solid growth potential”.
