DivX Signs Major Renewal with Sharp
Expanded Agreement includes Worldwide Licensing of DivX HEVC and DivX Plus Streaming
LAS VEGAS — CONSUMER ELECTRONICS SHOW 2014 — Rovi Corporation (NASDAQ:ROVI) today announced that Rovi and Sharp Corporation have agreed to renew a multi-year DivX® licensing agreement. The new agreement enables Sharp to integrate DivX HEVC technology in its next-generation AQUOS® TVs and AQUOS® Blu-ray disc recorder product lines to support the high-quality streaming and playback of DivX HEVC HD 720p/1080p and UltraHD/4K HEVC content. In addition, the agreement includes use of Rovi’s adaptive streaming solution, DivX Plus Streaming®.
“Sharp is a leader in the global consumer electronics device industry, and our new agreement is a significant milestone in our continued efforts to accelerate broad market adoption of HEVC,” said Dr. Kanaan Jemili, senior vice president, product management at Rovi. “Our continued collaboration with Sharp will enable us to gain even more momentum with driving HEVC and UltraHD/4K forward while also bringing cutting-edge features for consumers’ enjoyment of high-resolution content.”
DivX HEVC is part of an end-to-end solution helping to accelerate the adoption of the next-generation compression standard across the entire video distribution system. The solution includes MainConcept® encoding SDKs for professional content creators, the DivX Video Service™ with DivX DRM for protected content delivery across multi-screen devices, and popular DivX consumer software tools for PC-based content creation and playback. In addition, DivX HEVC will be integrated to the DivX Certification program that allow IC and OEM customers to quickly bring to market mobile and consumer electronics products that enable consistently high-quality DivX HEVC video playback.
DivX plans to host private meetings and product demonstrations for industry executives during the CES tradeshow in Las Vegas, January 7-10 at Caesars Palace. Invited attendees will have the opportunity to view live demonstrations of the company’s end-to-end solution powering the creation, delivery and multiscreen playback of next-generation video, including 4K content using the new compression standard HEVC/H.265.
