Tandberg Data Is New Owner of RDX® Technology
Tandberg Data acquires RDX business from ProStor Systems
Westminster, Colo., (May 12, 2011): Tandberg Data, the global supplier of data protection solutions, today announced that it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire the RDX business from ProStor Systems. The terms of the deal were not disclosed. Tandberg Data will acquire the RDX business, including intellectual property and key members of ProStor’s RDX engineering team. The RDX removable disk technology has become the industry standard in removable disk storage for backup, data protection and archive. Tandberg Data has established itself as a market leader in the removable disk market since the introduction of RDX in 2006.
ProStor Systems, founded in 2005, is the developer of the RDX removable disk technology and the InfiniVault line of intelligent, compliant archive solutions. After the asset acquisition, ProStor will focus on the development, marketing and sales of the InfiniVault range. InfiniVault uses RDX removable disk cartridges as the archival storage medium, for which Prostor will license the RDX technology from Tandberg Data.
“The acquisition of the RDX business further solidifies Tandberg Data’s position in the data protection market,” says Pat Clarke, CEO of Tandberg Data. “In the past year, we have expanded our product portfolio with new data protection products and appliances, and acquired our manufacturing facility in China. With the ownership of the RDX technology, we will be able to strengthen relationships with our customers, partners and RDX licensees, and grow the RDX business.”
Tandberg Data will work closely together with current RDX license partners, to further grow the removable disk market through continued investment in R&D, sales and marketing of the RDX technology.
“We look forward to working with our license partners on developing the RDX technology and growing the RDX customer base,” says Pat Clarke. “We will support partners like Imation in developing their RDX business. We have a long standing history of cooperation with Imation and we look forward to further strengthening this relationship.”
RDX Technology
RDX is a disk-based removable storage system with portable cartridges that combines the benefits of tape—reliability, portability, archive life and low cost—with the performance, speed, random access and ease of use of hard disk technology.
RDX Benefits
SMB customers can choose from a range of RDX cartridge capacities, including 160GB, 320GB, 500GB, 640GB and 1TB, and a range of SSD (solid-state disk) cartridges up to 512GB. All RDX cartridges are removable for off-site storage, disaster recovery and archival applications, and are built to last more than 10 years with normal use. With transfer rates up to 650GB/hr, RDX allows users to access any file in milliseconds while cutting their backup window from hours to minutes. In addition, the RDX technology’s forward compatibility enables users to preserve their technology investment because all future RDX cartridges will work in today’s systems.
RDX Innovation
Tandberg Data will continue to take the lead in introducing innovative solutions based on the RDX technology, such as the recently introduced RDX docks with USB 3.0 “SuperSpeed” and RDX SSD cartridges. In the past six months, Tandberg Data introduced two integrated RDX appliances: the AccuVault RDX data protection solution and the RDX QuikStation removable disk library.
