Toshiba unveils two new series of high-tech TVs featuring JACOB JENSEN design

New WL series and YL series TVs use powerful CEVO-ENGINE Technology to power PERSONAL-TV and SMART-TV applications

Toshiba Europe GmbH unveils two new TV ranges featuring Toshiba’s high-performance CEVO-ENGINE. Powered by the multiprocessor platform, the WL863 and YL863 TVs offer superb picture quality and brilliant 3D rendering plus user-friendly SMART-TV features such as online access to value-added services or recording of TV broadcasting programmes on external hard disk drives (USB recording). High-class PERSONAL-TV features provide excellent usability. Toshiba cooperated closely with Denmark’s JACOB JENSEN DESIGN to create exciting styling characterised by a filigree bezel and the use of top-grade materials such as sand-blasted aluminium. The black WL863 and the silver-coloured YL863 TVs will come in a choice of screen sizes spanning 107cm (42’’), 117cm (46’’) and 139cm (55’’). They will be available from the third quarter of 2011 in Europe.

CEVO ENGINE: enabling striking applications and technologies
High-end TVs, such as the new WL863 and YL863 devices, need to offer a wide range of challenging features. These run from online connectivity with access to value-added services to TV programmes or feature films with excellent picture quality in 2D and 3D. These features – many of which are running in parallel – require new, sophisticated control concepts and huge calculation power. These were not available in TVs before the introduction of Toshiba’s 55ZL1. It was the first device featuring the CEVO-ENGINE with a multi-core processing unit that was able to perform many calculations simultaneously. An additional high-speed DRAM accelerates calculation speed even further. A co-processor, dedicated to computing complex picture-quality algorithms, allows the display of marvellous images in 2D and in 3D including 2D to 3D conversion in near real-time.

Personal TV with high-class usability features
The CEVO-ENGINE turns the WL863 and YL863 TVs into personal devices for several users. Personal TV allows up to four family members to store their preferred picture settings, individual channel lists and a personal batch of recorded content to avoid inconvenient and time-consuming searches for movies stored on a connected hard disk drive. The new WL863 and YL863 TVs also offer personalisation of sound settings: they either remember the volume level of each user after switching off or automatically choose the user’s preferred and stored volume level when switched on. To identify the viewer sitting in front of the screen, the TVs feature an integrated camera with a face recognition application and select the personal settings accordingly. Plus, the TVs recognise if nobody is sitting in front of the screen at all. They automatically switch into standby mode if no-one is watching for a time.

SMART-TV brings multimedia experience to a higher level
WL863 and YL863 TVs are compatible with Toshiba Places, Toshiba’s Web-based content and service platform for TVs and laptops. With the new TVs, users can access ‘Video Place’ offering a broad selection of movies, ‘News Place’ providing news from all over the world, ‘Music Place’ allowing users to access various music catalogues and Internet radio services and ‘Social Place’, which gives access to services to share private content with friends and family members all over the world. To complement Toshiba Places, the TVs also support HbbTV®. Hybrid broadcast broadband TV is a European standard that provides an open platform to seamlessly combine TV services delivered via broadcast with services delivered via broadband; amongst them the provisioning of additional information related to the TV programme or Catch-up TV. Last but not least, with Toshiba Apps Connect, owners of an iPhone® no longer need to reach for the remote control but can control the TVs using their smartphones.

Auto Calibration takes picture quality to studio level
Thanks to Active Vision Rate 800, fast action scenes are no challenge to WL863 and YL863 TVs; they always display pin-sharp and detailed pictures. To ensure that the flat design doesn’t compromise picture quality, the Toshiba engineers integrated PRO LED 32 into the new high-end TVs. PRO LED 32 splits the Edge-LED backlighting into 32 clusters that can be triggered and controlled independently. Toshiba also integrated the Auto Calibration(1) tool into the new TV series. Controlled by a sensor(2) connected via USB, Auto Calibration automatically chooses parameter settings that provide picture quality normally only found in professional studio equipment. Thanks to the CEVO-ENGINE, Auto Calibration doesn’t require an external PC.
